Toolbox: Stewardship at Every Phase

In capital fundraising, relationships don’t begin with the gift — and they certainly don’t end there. The work of stewardship is the ongoing practice of caring for those relationships: making sure supporters feel informed, included, and genuinely connected to the mission they are helping to advance. It’s easy for stewardship to slip down the priority list during the intensity of a campaign, but its real purpose is simple and powerful: building a community of supporters who believe in the work and want to see it succeed.
At the beginning of a campaign, stewardship often looks like inclusion. Prospective supporters are invited into the vision, progress is shared candidly, and leaders demonstrate that the project is thoughtful, disciplined, and worthy of belief. As momentum builds, stewardship becomes a matter of communication and continuity — keeping donors informed about milestones, acknowledging their partnership, and reinforcing that each contribution is part of a larger collective effort.
When the campaign reaches completion, stewardship takes on another dimension. This is the moment to reflect, celebrate, and demonstrate the impact of the work accomplished together. Done well, stewardship transforms a successful campaign into something more enduring: a network of supporters who feel invested not only in what has been built, but in what the organization will achieve next.
